Yorkshire Cancer Research Yorkshire Bowel Cancer Improvement Programme Patient-Public Group Member

Opportunity Summary:

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a programme of work called the Yorkshire Cancer Research Bowel Cancer Improvement Programme, working to improve the outcomes for patients with bowel cancer in the Yorkshire and Humber region. We are looking for an individual with lived experience of bowel cancer to act as a deputy patient representative on the programme. As the deputy patient representative, you will work alongside one other patient representative with the overarching responsibility of helping to ensure that our work is not only driven by data but informed by the priorities of patients and the public.

About the Yorkshire Cancer Research Bowel Cancer Improvement Programme
There is evidence of variation in the management of bowel cancer, and outcomes for patients across the Yorkshire and Humber Region. The Yorkshire Cancer Research Bowel Cancer Improvement Programme aims to understand what the variations are, why they occur and then address the issues to ultimately improve outcomes for patients.

Our researchers analyse routinely generated health data to understand the differences in the demographics, treatments and outcomes of patients across Yorkshire and the Humber. We also collect Patient Related Outcome Measures (PROMS) data as well as tissue samples in order to help create a more complete picture of the care that takes place in the region.

Using this data, we engage directly with the Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDT’s) through our workstream leads and provide educational workshops, studies and audits in order to optimise practice. The programme consists of seven workstreams which cover the clinical areas involved in the management of bowel cancer. These are: Surgery, Radiology, Pathology, Oncology, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Anaesthetics and Gastroenterology.

The opportunity.
The core role of the patient representatives on the programme is to ensure that patients’ rights and interests, as well as their data, are protected and used appropriately. This will be done through establishing close working relationships with the seven workstream leads and offering both support and challenge to their activities. Although this is a regional programme you will link directly into a Patient-Public group of a national programme working to improve the outcomes of patients with bowel cancer across the UK. A key part of the role will be to develop plain language summaries for our research.

We are looking for someone from the Yorkshire and Humber region with experience of bowel cancer. There is no other set criteria other than that you will have the enthusiasm and the confidence to comment, advise, and make recommendations reflecting the general views and concerns of patients and the public.

All reasonable travel and subsistence expenses that occur as part of your role will be covered. Honoraria will also be offered in line with Involve guidelines.

As part of your role you will be expected to attend a monthly meeting and a bi-monthly meeting each lasting for approximately 2 hours. These meetings will take place during normal working hours

If this sounds like something you might be interested in, please contact Emily Connearn by email on e.connearn@leeds.ac.uk by the 29th February who will give you information on how to apply.
