Behind the Microscope
Colleagues in our Pathology workstream, along with other colleagues at the University of Leeds have teamed up with the Thackray Medical Museum to create a person-centred pathology exhibit called "Behind the Microscope". This is focussed on sharing with the public the role of pathologists, who they are and what they do - both in research and clinically. Less than 1 in 10 people are aware of histopathology, despite its critical role in all clinical specialties. We are hoping the exhibit has been able to inspire young people in the area to consider a pathology related career or at least understand more about who pathologists are and demystify what they do.
The exhibit was created alongside the work of artist Molly Pukes who has designed colourful and fun cartoons to tell the stories behind the life of a pathology researcher and the patient journey, from identifying a lump, to being diagnosed and treated for cancer (in this case lymphoma).
There is also a section on bowel cancer and some of the research currently being carried out on the immune response in bowel cancer using AI.
The exhibit has been running since February and will be up until August 2023.
